Angelenos have shown huge courage since June 6th. Many among these protesters are union members defending themselves and their siblings against the Trump Administration’s unjust and inhumane attacks on immigrants. Unions are at their finest when they stand in solidarity with their communities. David Huerta, President of Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California did just this when he joined members as a “community observer” at raids by Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Huerta’s violent detention is despicable. It is the latest example of ICE and the rest of the Trump Administration violating human dignity and basic rights. With brazen cruelty, the Trump Administration has further escalated this violence and deployed the National Guard against the Los Angeles protests.
The Executive Committee of Progressive Workers Union calls for Huerta’s immediate release, the immediate withdrawal of the National Guard and Marines from Los Angeles, the immediate stoppage of ICE raids, and the complete abolition of ICE. Until then, we commend the protestors in Los Angeles for standing together.
